As a teacher, I originally used vocalises so that my classical students would be able to learn the specific operatic runs, cadenzas, and ornamentations that they would need to know in order to sing the literature of the masters. Mastering these difficult virtuosic patterns was much more effective when using the vocalises of composers such as Lutgen, Marchesi, Panofka, and similar composers. Moving from vocalise studies into literature was much smoother than starting with arias and songs since the student was not encumbered with both the vocally challenging patterns as well as foreign language texts. Once the voice was used to the patterns of music, it was much easier for the student to engage in language studies, songs and then arias. One of the surprising aspects of having students of popular vocal music study this literature was that the ability to perform rapid R&B riffs was greatly improved. I hope you will enjoy working with these charming pieces of music. They are challenging, and a lot of fun!

Lutgen VocalisesI recommend that the student purchase the Schirmer edition of the Lutgen Vocalise book of their vocal type in order to learn the music more quickly, and to be able to learn the correct dynamics, ritardandi, etc. This is a 4 CD collection of twenty vocalises of progressive difficulty. The purpose of this collection is to learn to sing coloratura passages solidly. Coloratura is rapid, florid singing that is especially common in the Bel Canto style of operatic literature of the eighteenth century. Coloratura is also common in baroque music as well as much of the classical song literature, 19th century opera music, and much of the oratorio works of the great composers. Coloratura in popular music is called “riffing.” Although the actual passages in these studies differ from the riffs of popular music, many popular music students have commented on how much more easily they can riff after having mastered these vocalises.

PanofkaIn this collection, Panofka uses modified opera melodies to facilitate the teacher’s introduction of different elements of voice technique. Each melody isolates a different vocal issue and allows the student a chance to work on these techniques without the distraction of texts.
